Bible 1706 - awaiting restoration
Printed in London, this book has crossed more than distance.
Somehow, it arrived in New Brunswick, carrying over three centuries within its structure, time held not only in its paper and binding, but in its quiet persistence. The front board has come away, while the back remains attached, though its inner hinge has already given way. The leather and its supporting cords still hold, but not without strain.
Despite this, the book stands in remarkable condition.
What remains most striking is its sense of origin: the generous margins, still echoing the layout of manuscript tradition, where space was left not only for text, but for thought, annotation, and presence. It holds the memory of a time when books were not only read, but engaged with slowly, deliberately.
Its structure, however, presents a particular challenge. The spine is not hollow; the text block is adhered directly, forming a unity that resists intervention. To reattach what has loosened will require entering that structure with precision and restraint, working within its logic, rather than imposing a new one.
The intention is to stabilize what is at risk, without disturbing what continues to hold. To reinforce the connection between board and body, so that the book may be handled again without further loss.
For now, it remains in a state of suspension, intact, but vulnerable, holding its long passage through time, and waiting for the care that will allow it to continue.
